Getting Set Up in the BrightSign App
Walk through the steps to set up your BrightSign companion app
All new BrightSign users will be greeted with the onboarding process after downloading the BrightSign Glove app and signing up for an account.
This process walks you through pairing your glove with the app, calibrating it to your hands and range of motion, and then provides some additional information about using the app’s features.
Step 1 - Pairing
First, ensure that you have accepted all of the permissions requested by the app and that Bluetooth support is enabled on your smart device.
Once you begin the pairing step, ensuring that the glove is turned on and that the blue light is flashing slowly, hold the wrist enclosure to the back of your smart device. The phone should pair with the glove quickly and then proceed to the next step.
If your glove is already paired with and connected to another phone in the vicinity, it will not be able to successfully pair with the new device. In general you should ensure that you never have more than one device paired with the same glove in the same vicinity.
Please ensure that there is only one unpaired glove turned on and near to the smart device while you are attempting to pair. If more than one glove is turned on and unconnected, you might accidentally pair your smart device with the wrong glove.
Step 2 - Calibration
In this step, the app will explain the process to you and invite you to tap a button to begin calibrating.
Once you press the button to start, hold your hand (wearing the glove) out in front of you scrunching up your fingers and thumb as tight as you can. Next, stretch them out and back as far as you can. Then, rotate your wrist as far as you can anti-clockwise, then as far as you can clockwise. Rotate your arm up to point to the sky, then down to the floor. Lastly, rotate it at the elbow to point to the right and then to the left. Finally, you can press the button to stop calibrating.
While the actual movements are arbitrary, the purpose of this sequence of movements is to capture the full range of motion of your hands and arms. If you aren’t able to do it fully, don’t worry - that is part of teaching the glove what you can and can’t do.
If you have a limited range of motion and are unable to perform these steps at all, please get in touch with us and we can design an alternative calibration sequence that fits your needs and abilities.
Step 3 - Voice Selection
In this stage, you must select the voice you want to use. You can do so by narrowing down the list of available options by making selections from a set of dropdown menus.
First, you must select the language that you will use with BrightSign. This might not be the same language that the app interface is in for you.
Next, you can select the accent variation of that language. Some languages only have one accent variation available - in these cases, the accent will be automatically selected for you.
Then, you can select the gender of the voice that you want. Some languages only have one gender available - in these cases, that gender will be automatically selected for you.
For language and accent pairs that have different age options, you can next select whether you want an adult, child or elderly voice. Only some languages have these variations, so if yours doesn’t, the “adult” option will be selected automatically.
Lastly, you can choose the name of the voice that you want to use. Speech is generated by an AI system that is based on real human voices, so all of our voices are named after people.
Choose one and then press the “Select” button to continue.
If you are interested in having yours or a family member's voice available in the app (don’t worry, it will only be available for you), please get in touch with us to discuss our affordable bespoke voice options.
Step 4 - Instructions
The next few screens explain how to use the different parts of the app. Make sure to read them carefully so you understand all of the features, before continuing into the app.
